Smelt harvesting at Neva (St. Petersburg) to last till May 15 (photo)
Smelt harvesting at the Neva river (St. Petersburg) commenced on May 2, 2013 and will last till May 15, IAA PortNews learnt from Denis Belyayev, Head of North West Department of Russian Federal Fisheries Agency.
According to him, smelt harvesting is being carried out at the only berth in St. Petersburg, at Oktyabrskaya embankment. Fresh fish can be purchased directly from the berth. The fishing company operating there is RKL OJSC. Each cast brings about 1 tonne of smelt.
Smelt is the main commercial fish of St. Petersburg. It accounts for 50% of gross harvest on the shore of the Gulf of Finland – some 700-900 tonnes per year. Apart from the Baltic and White Seas smelt lives in Ladoga, Onega and Karelian lakes.
