Makarov University is Russia’s largest center for industry-focused personnel training – Maxim Sokolov
Newly integrated institution, the Admiral Makarov State University of Maritime and Inland Shipping, has become the largest center for industry-focused personnel training not only in the North West region but in the country as a whole, IAA PortNews journalist cites RF Transport Minister Maxim Sokolov, as saying today, April 19, 2013, at the University’s Academic Council.
The Minister noted that the integration of two institutions has considerably increased the potential of maritime education with the establishment of a powerful industry-focused educational center in St. Petersburg.
Among the strategic objectives of the state, Maxim Sokolov stressed the training of highly-qualified personnel adapted to industry-focused, scientific and international requirements, mastering state-of-the-art technologies, combining good grounding and skills.
Speaking about the positive aspects of the training process organization, Sokolov mentioned efficient use of the territory, education-and-training base, enhancing of scientific-and-education potential.
As IAA PortNews reported earlier, the Maritime Academy had been set up within the Makarov University as a separate institution. Among benefits of this educational form the Minister noted the education combined with the crew accommodation, obligatory uniform, elements of watch keeping duties and preservation of fleet traditions.
Besides, Maxim Sokolov spoke about the necessity to attract interested and gifted students and cadets to scientific activities and creative work as well as to impart skills to scientific work of any kinds and forms.
Among the problems the Minister distinguished a great few of training sites and their territorial dispersion all around the city. A campus system was proposed as a solution.
As it was reported earlier, on September 11, 2012, Maxim Sokolov, RF Transport Minister of the Russian Federation, signed a decree on reorganization of two large industry-focused higher educational institutions - St.-Petersburg State University of Waterway Communications (SPSUWC) and Admiral Makarov State Maritime Academy (SMA) in the form of affiliation of the Academy to the University. The name of the new institution is the Admiral Makarov State University of Maritime and Inland Shipping.
