Introduction of environmental restrictions at Baltic will lead to dire consequences - Lithuanian Ship Owners Association
Introduction of tough environment restrictions in the Baltic Sea may lead to dire consequences, Gintautas Kutka, director of the Lithuanian Ship Owners Association, says in Helsinki, at the conference dedicated to alternative marine fuels, IAA PortNews journalist reports.
According to Gintautas Kutka, these measures will facilitate the shift of cargo flows from maritime routes to roads, especially in such countries as Poland, Lithuania, Denmark and Germany.
When speaking about the alternatives to conventional marine fuels, the representative of the Association remarked that all of them are controversial and require considerable investments while the shipping industry is in its hard times in respect of profitability.
“It is difficult to speak about investments when your pockets are empty,” - Gintautas Kutka said.
Concerning the scrubbers he noted that they raise the vessels’ gross tonnage which results in higher port dues in the European Union.
