European Commission to bind all EU ports set up LNG refueling points by 2020
The European Commission is elaborating a directive binding all 23 key seaports of the European Union to set up LNG refueling points by 2020. According to IAA PortNews journalist, this was announced at the Helsinki-hosted conference dedicated to alternative marine fuels by Torsten Klimke, Maritime transport & logistics, Directorate-General for Mobility and Transport.
Torsten Klimke says no unified standards for such terminals have been developed yet. This work is being carried out by International Maritime Organization (IMO) and International Standards Organization (ISO).
According to Torsten Klimke, LNG is a temporary solution with the forecasted growth of methanol use.
Besides, the European Commission is considering the shore-side electricity supply in seaports and standardization of requirements to comply with.
