Russian research vessel Akademik Treshnikov returns from Antarctic voyage
Russian scientific-research vessel of Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute, the Akademik Treshnikov, returns from her maiden Antarctic voyage to St. Petersburg on April 11. According to the Institute’s press center, there are 102 persons on board the vessel including 56 crew members, 27 members of Russian Antarctic Expedition and 19 attached warranty experts.
From December 21, 2012 the Akademik Treshnikov ran 21,773 nautical miles including 1,568 miles in ice and 3,138 miles in bergy waters of Antarctica. During the voyage, the vessel called on the port of Bremerhaven (Germany) and Montevideo (Uruguay).
The main tasks of the voyage were testing the vessel’s shipping and ice characteristics, basic and auxiliary equipment. All the tasks were fulfilled in spite of 125 reclamations made by the warranty team (Admiralty Shipyards representatives), which is typical for a run-in period.
The Akademik Treshnikov will later replace another research vessel, the Akademik Fyodorov, which has been working in both Antarctica and Arctica for over 20 years.
