Throughput of Liepaja port (Latvia) down 20.7% to 1.35 mln t in QI'13
In January-March, 2013, the port of Liepaja (Latvia) handled 1.351 mln t of cargo (-20.7%, year-on-year), IAA PortNews learnt from the port administration. In the accounting period, transshipment of grain cargo fell by 38.4% to 424,500 tonnes, timber – down by 34.1% to 139,500 tonnes, ferrous metal – up 1.7 times to 159,800 tonnes, non-ferrous metals – down 14.5% to 50,900 tonnes, scrap metal – down 70.5% to 51,800 tonnes, coal- up 30.3% to 48,200 tonnes, construction materials – down 14.5% to 78,800 tonnes, wood pellets – up 1.4 times to 52,300 tonnes.
The port’s container throughput increased by 6% to 1,021 TEUs. Transshipment of Ro-Ro cargoes climbed by 13% to 7,562 units. The number of calls fell by 18% to 359 calls.
The port of Liepaja is the third busiest port of Latvia. Half of its turnover is formed by oil products and dry loose cargo from CIS countries, mainly Belorus. In 2012, the port of Liepaja handled 7.43 mln tonnes of cargo.
