Dombrovskis: Freeport of Riga managers could be replaced
Latvian Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis (Unity) does not rule out that management of the Freeport of Riga could be replaced in the wake of the State Audit Office's report, The Baltic Course refers to LETA.
The Audit Office's report is a serious signal that must be closely evaluated, Dombrovskis told reporters on Tuesday. If necessary, Freeport of Riga board members' suitability will be reviewed.
As reported, the activity of Freeport of Riga's management is not in line with good governance principles and the applicable laws and regulations, as a result, there have been several violations and funding misuse cases and the port has lost more than LVL 41 million altogether, the State Audit Office has concluded.
The Audit Office's conclusions will be forwarded to the Prosecutor General's Office.
Freeport of Riga lies on both banks of the River Daugava covering 6.3 hectares. The port’s berth length is 13,800 meters, maximum draft at the berths is 12.2 meters. Up to 80% of the Freeport of Riga cargo turnover is made up of transit cargoes forwarded to or received from the CIS countries. In 2012, Freeport of Riga increased its throughput by 5.8%, year-on-year, to 36,051,900 tonnes of cargo.
