Development of dry bulk handling facilities in port of Gdansk
Sea-Invest Group plans investment of EUR 40-50 mln into the construction of a Bulk Cargo Terminal in the port of Gdansk, PortNews journalist learnt from Julian F.Skelnik, BPO Chairman. This project is one of the greatest investments in the Port’s history. The existing Coal Terminal operating within the outer port area handles only export coal while the new terminal, which is supposed to be the largest bulk cargo terminal in the Baltic Sea region, will be able to handle export/import iron ore, coal, biomass and other dry bulk cargo. The first vessel is expected to be handled here this year.
One of the main players in the market of dry bulk handling, SEA-invest is active in tens of terminals. These terminals include open-air as well as covered storage facilities, and can be found in Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Poland and Ivory Coast.
Another bulk cargo terminal valued at some EUR 10 mln is being built in the inner port to handle smaller vessels. It is to be operated by Malteurop Groupe – the world’s leading malt producer, with a current annual production capacity of more than 2.2 mln tons. The Group is present in 13 countries in Europe, North America, Oceania and Asia, with 24 industrial sites.
The port of Gdansk is a major international transportation hub situated in the central part of the southern Baltic coast, which ranks among Europe's fastest growing regions. According to the strategy of the European Union, the Port of Gdansk plays a significant role as a key link in the Trans-European Transport Corridor No. 6 connecting the Nordic countries with Southern and Eastern Europe.
