Port of Klaipeda two-month traffic (with Butinge Terminal numbers) rises 15.1% to 7.68m tonnes
Cargo throughput at the port of Klaipeda in January-February this year, taking into account the volumes handled at Butinge terminal, was up 15.1% from the same period a year before, to 7.685 million tonnes, the Port Authority told PortNews. Handling of loads at Klaipeda, excluding cargo shipments through Butinge Terminal, increased by 15.5% to 6.086 million tonnes.
Liquid bulk shipments grew 11.9% year-on-year to 3.598 million tonnes. The two-month volume of suction and grab bulk cargoes soared by 38.8%, to 2.432 million tonnes, while shipments of general cargo fell 3.1% and totaled 1.654 million tonnes. Handling of Ro-Ro cargoes reached 743,803 tonnes (+3.4%). Container throughput at the Klaipeda box terminal was 62,879 TEUs (+8.3%).
Passenger traffic during the reporting period was down 5.7% to 33,976 people. In January-February, Klaipeda port saw a 9.1-percent gain in ship calls, to 1,124 vessels.
State-owned Port of Klaipeda, the northernmost ice-free port on the East coast of the Baltic Sea, is the largest Lithuanian transport hub, connecting sea and inland traffic lanes. There are 17 stevedore companies, shipyards and other operators at the port, providing a broad range of services. In 2012, Port of Klaipeda cargo throughput (including Butinge terminal figures) was 43.761m tonnes.
