DCT Gdansk to start handling Maersk Triple-E vessels from August’13
From August 2013, Deepwater Container Terminal Gdansk will start handling 18,000-TEU Triple-E vessels of Maersk Line. For the first time this vessel will call at DCT Gdansk during her maiden voyage from Asia to Europe.
As PortNews journalist learnt from Marko Mihajic, Communications and Campaign Manager East Central Europe, Maersk Polska Sp. z o.o., Maersk Line launched its regular weekly calls in Gdansk in May 2011 as part of the AE10 weekly service. Last week DCT Gdansk handled E-class Maersk Edmonton container ship. The majority of cargo is intended for Russia.
Maersk Line, the world's biggest container carrier, will take delivery of four to five ultra-large containerships of 18,000 teu in capacity each within this year. DSME shipyard in South Korea will build all 20 of the Triple-E vessels, the first to be delivered in July 2013.
Deepwater Container Terminal Gdansk, Poland’s newest and most modern container and Ro-Ro terminal facility, was officially opened in 2007. DCT is the fastest growing terminal in Poland. DCT Gdansk is an ideal gateway to Poland as well as the transhipment hub for St. Petersburg and the rest of the Baltic region. DCT Gdansk has unlimited potential for expansion, up to 4 million TEU capacity in future planned development phases. DCT has 650m of continuous quay length with a maximum depth of 16.5m. Thanks to its 60-ton super Post-Panamax cranes, extensive yard area, all year round ice-free and tide-free deep sea direct access, DCT Gdansk is the perfect hub for any line’s transhipment needs.
