Russian carriers, shipowners set to create Chamber of Shipping
The General Meeting of the Association of Russian shipping companies (ASCO) has unanimously voted for merger with the Union of Russian Shipowners (SOROSS) and for creation of the Chamber of Shipping of Russia, PortNews reports from the ASCO meeting.
According to the head of ASCO Alexey Kļaviņ, as a result of the merger the total tonnage of the Russian Chamber of Shipping will be 21 million tonnes.
"If we create the Chamber of Shipping, its voice will be heard around the world," the PN correspondent quoted Alexey Klyavin as saying.
The idea of the Chamber of Shipping of Russia was given the thumbs up from Russian Minister of Transport Maxim Sokolov, who opened the meeting, and Evgeny Moskvichev, head of the State Duma Transportation Committee.
Previously, on January 31, 2013 the ASCO Board has approved the creation in conjunction with SOROSS of the National chamber of shipping, which could become the largest Russian business corporation of companies and organizations engaged in the maritime and inland waterway transportation. Today, the ASCO unites 50 organizations of sea and river transport, including 35 shipping companies.
