Pirates’ activity down to the level of 2008 – RF Navy
The activity of pirates in the Gulf of Aden fell to the level of 2008, PortNews reporter cites Vasili Leshok, Deputy Chief of the Main Staff of RF Navy as saying at the general meeting of the Union of Russian Shipowners. According to him, the following ships are currently executing their mission in the Gulf of Aden: large anti-submarine warfare ship Marshal Shaposhnikov and two 2 support ships (Of the Pacific Fleet). In February 2013, they are to be replaced by large anti-submarine warfare ship Severomorsk (Northern Fleet).
According to RF Navy representative, no successful seizures of vessels happened in the Gulf of Aden from May 20, 2012. However the area of the pirates’ activities has expanded and now includes the Gulf of Guinea though the pirates’ objective there is to steal fuel or cargo but not to capture vessels.
