World’s largest quay-cranes set sail
DP World-run London Gateway is to take delivery of three of the largest quay-cranes in history, following construction at Zhenhua Port Machinery company (ZPMC) in Shanghai, Seatrade Asia online reports.
The cranes, slightly taller than the London Eye at 138m, started their voyage from China yesterday. Semi-automation technology will enable the cranes to handle a greater volume of cargo. The long boom of each crane will reach up to 25 rows across deck, catering for the vast container vessels of tomorrow.
"These cranes are among the most advanced in the industry, assisting our operatives to deliver a reliable and consistently high level of productivity," said Tim Halhead, London Gateway operations director. "The size of the cranes future-proofs the port, allowing London Gateway to handle the next generation of ultra large container ships."
