Russia should secure its position in the segment of construction of special hi-tech vessels. RF President Vladimir Putin spoke about it at the naming ceremony for the Vitus Bering lead icebreaking platform supply vessel owned by the Sovcomflot Group, the presidential administration reports. According to PortNews reporter’s running commentary, the Vitus Bering vessel is now located at Lieutenant Shmidt embankment in St. Petersburg.
“This is one of the most advanced ships in the world, capable of operating in the ice up to 1.7 metres thick. It was built by Russian shipbuilders jointly with Finnish partners, and I want to express my gratitude to our Finnish colleagues. However it is significant that 90% of the work was done by Russian companies. We must continue with the same momentum in the future. I repeat, we have every chance to successfully develop the entire range of special, highly advanced vessels,” Putin said.
According to the President, up-to-date multipurpose vessels of the Vitus Bering series will make it possible to carry out round-the-year delivery of personnel, provision and consumables to oil platforms. Icebreakers of this series are to be engaged in particular to ensure smooth operation of oil platforms at the Arkutun-Dagi field in the Sea of Okhotsk under the Sakhalin-1 project.
