Two men missing after cargo ship sinks in Selayar
Two are missing and nine remain adrift on a lifeboat after the cargo ship MV Emeline sank off Selayar Islands, South Sulawesi, The Jakarta Post reports.
The ship, controlled by Captain Ammang Kaso and carrying cement, departed from Soekarno-Hatta Seaport to Banyuwangi, East Java, on Tuesday. It is suspected to have encountered bad weather and rough seas.
Information about the ship’s situation was only received by Makassar Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) on Wednesday morning.
On Wednesday afternoon, KM Mahakam River sailed through the area and rescued six men. The ship, which was en route to Surabaya, East Java, from Makassar, had to make an unscheduled stop at Bulukumba regency due to the bad weather.
Makassar Basarnas, in coordination with Makassar Naval Base, sent out a rescue boat manned by several personnel to rescue the nine crewmen, after a search and rescue team using a helicopter failed to reach their location due to the strong wind.
