Port of Oulu throughput was flat in 2012
Cargo traffic at the Port of Oulu in 2012 remained nearly at about the same level of the previous year, reaching 3.55 million tons (-0.5% y-o-y), the Port Authority said.
Exports volume rose 8.2% from last year’s numbers to 1.44 million tons, while imports fell 5.7% to 2.11 million tons. Shipments of paper increased by 6.1% to 828,970 tons, of carbonate - slid by 0.7% to 672,950 tons. Handling of pulp fell by 7.8% to 315,000 tons, of salt – dropped by 8.8% to 56,630 tons, of saw logs - soared 57.9% to 159,670 tons.
Container traffic increased by 28% to 41,740 TEUs. The number of calls rose 8.1% to 556 units.
The Port of Oulu (Oulun Satama) is one of the leading ports of Finland for forest industry products and unitized cargo on the Gulf of Bothnia. The harbors in Oritkari, Nuottasaari, Vihreäsaari and Toppila have 500 - 600 ship calls each year. The port specializes in handling exported paper, timber, imported petroleum products and raw materials for the local timber industry. In 2011, cargo throughput at the Port of Oulu soared to its record high ever, 3,567,202 tons.
