Fednav orders new ice-breaking bulk carrier
Canadian bulk carrier Fednav Limited (Fednav) has announced it has placed an order for the design and construction of a 25,000 dwt ice-breaking bulk carrier with Japan's Sumitomo Corporation and Universal Shipbuilding Corporation, Ship & Bunker reports.
The joint statement made with Canadian Royalties said the vessel will be used to transport nickel and copper concentrates from Canadian Royalties' Nunavik Nickel Project in northern Quebec to customers in Europe as well as the import from Europe of mine supplies and equipment.
Fednav say the vessel, scheduled for delivery in December 2013, will join what is already the world's largest fleet of ice-class vessels who operate year-round in ice-covered waters.
In August Fednav ordered six new fuel-efficient "environmentally advanced" vessels to be built at the Oshima Shipyard in Japan.
