Sandy's death toll rises to 38
The death toll from megastorm Sandy climbed rapidly on Tuesday as millions of people across the Eastern Seaboard began dealing with the extensive damage caused by massive flooding, high winds and fire, USA Today reports.
An estimated 7.4 million people were without power in 15 states and the District of Columbia and the U.S. death toll rose to 38, many of the victims killed by falling trees. Seventeen of the victims were in New York state, including 10 in New York City.
New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Tuesday that he expects the city number to rise as emergency workers move through neighborhoods.
The mayor gave a somber account of some of those who died.
