Zvezdochka Shipyard starts shipbuilder’s trials of INS Sindhurakshak
Diesel-electric submarine INS Sindhurakshak of the Indian Navy, which is undergoing repairs and upgrades at Zvezdochka Shipyard (Ship Repair Center Zvezdochka) has put to sea for the shipbuilder’s sea trials, the Company press release said.
For two weeks, a team of the shipyard and the submarine crew will be testing all systems of the ship. Upon completion of the tests INS Sindhurakshak will return to the shipyard’s dock to remove possible defects. Then the vessel will undergo two more testing of armory systems.
The submarine renovation and modernization contract was signed by the Russian shipyard and the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of India on June 4, 2010, and in August of that year, the ship arrived in Severodvinsk. After retrofitting the submarine armaments include a modern Club-S anti-ship missiles system, more than ten systems of Indian and foreign manufacturers, namely the USHUS hydro-acoustic unit, the CCS-MK-2 communications system and the Porpoise radar installation. The INS Sindhurakshak has also had its cooling systems updated and undergone other operations to improve the submarine’s combat characteristics and safety.
Severodvinsk-based Zvezdochka Shipyard (Shipbuilding Center ‘Zvezdochka’) is a diversified shipbuilding enterprise. It has two covered slipways with seven shipbuilding yards, which are designed for retrofitting and construction of vessels with a launching weight of up to 18,000 tons. The firm is majority owned by Northern Shipbuilding and Ship Repair Center, part of JSC United Shipbuilding Corporation.
