ABB provides power systems for wind turbine installation vessel
Swiss power and automation technology company ABB says it has delivered four propulsion systems for wind turbine installation vessels to be used in Singapore.
The Azipod C systems will be part of a Blue Ocean II Wind Turbine Installation Vessel built by Samsung Shipyard in Korea.
Samsung also used four of the same systems for the first Blue Ocean vessel last year.
The systems, built at ABB's new Azipod CX factory in Shanghai, China, were said to save space in the vessel hull and can help reduce fuel consumption by 25 percent while improving their maneuvering ability in all types of weather.
"The Azipod C factory in Shanghai helps us meet the fast-growing demand of the Chinese shipyards for high-end vessels, at the same time, allowing us to get closer to customers of other key shipbuilding markets like Japan and South Korea," said Heikki Soljama, global head of ABB's Marine and Cranes Business Unit.
ABB is boosting its investment in China, both to serve the local market and to make products for export, reflecting a trend toward the production of complicated products—rather than commodities produced with cheap labor—in China, according to China Daily.
