Building of largest Canadian CONRO starts
The Oceanex Connaigra will have a deadweight carrying capacity of 19,500 tonnes, Ship & Bunker reports. Construction has begun on what is planned to be the largest Canadian flag container/RORO (ConRO) ship, according to Oceanex Inc.
"The vessel will be one of the most modern, innovative, environmentally friendly and adaptable ConRo ships in the world," said Flensburger President and CEO Peter Sierk.
The twenty knot, ice-class vessel, to be called the Oceanex Connaigra, will be 210 meters long with a deadweight carrying capacity of 19,500 tonnes.
"Construction of this unique ship represents an investment of more than $100 million, demonstrating Oceanex's commitment to meeting the needs of our customers throughout Eastern Canada and particularly the province of Newfoundland and Labrador," said Oceanex Executive Chairman Sid Hynes.
The vessel is being built by Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft mbH & Co. KG (Flensburger) of Germany, and will be equipped with a dry scrubber exhaust gas cleaning system for its main engines.
The ship's weather deck, which has a load capacity of 11,000 metric tonnes of containers, is designed for lift-on/lift-off container ship operation and can accommodate containers including the Oceanex high lift cube 53' units.
The ship also offers a 40' stern ramp that can accommodate dimensional loads weighing several hundred tonnes, as well as a side ramp and starboard side door for faster loading and unloading of automobiles.
The Oceanex Connaigra is scheduled for delivery in the fall of 2013 and will join the company's three other ships, the MV Cabot, the Oceanex Sanderling, and the Oceanex Avalon.
Oceanex provides intermodal transportation services between Mexico, the United States, and mainland Canada to the island of Newfoundland.
