Pirates strike bulk carrier off East Kalimantan
Three pirates have struck a bulk carrier anchored off Indonesia's East Kalimantan on Tuesday, injuring a crew and making away with some valuables, Seatrade Asia online reports.
Bulk carrier Bulk Neptune was anchored at Muara Berau Anchorage, Samarinda, East Kalimantan when three pirates boarded the vessel at the forecastle, according to an incident alert by ReCAAP.
One of the pirates armed with a knife then kicked and punched one of the crew who sustained minor injuries to his back, lips and knees. The pirates also took a wrist watch from one of the crew.
Subsequent checks by the crew revealed that the three pirates broke the padlock from the anchor hawse pipe cover to board the bulk carrier.
“There has been an increase in the number of incidents off East Kalimantan since January 2012 with a total of five incidents reported there so far,” ReCAAP said.
