Cruiser, submarine back in port after collision
A submarine and an Aegis cruiser that collided off the East Coast on Saturday afternoon were back in port and being evaluated Sunday, the Navy reported.
Operating submerged, the attack submarine Montpelier was apparently rising to periscope depth, a Navy spokesman said, when it was struck by the cruiser San Jacinto about 3:30 p.m. Eastern Time on Saturday.
No one was reported injured in the mishap. Both ships continued to operate under their own power. Montpelier is at Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay, Ga., and San Jacinto is at Naval Station Mayport, Fla., for damage assessment, the Navy said.
The submarine’s nuclear power plant was unaffected, the Navy said in a statement, but San Jacinto received damage to its large sonar dome, located at the base of the ship’s bow.
The ships were conducting exercises in the Jacksonville operating area off the northeast Florida coast, the spokesman said.
Both ships are homeported at Norfolk, Va.
The incident is under investigation, the Navy said.
