Qatargas develops LNG technology to fuel ships
Qatargas is developing MEGI (main engine gas injection) which will enable ships to use liquefied natural gas (LNG) instead of fuel oil, according to its top official, Gulftimes reports.
“One of the many projects Qatargas is developing is MEGI, which will enable the injection of LNG into our ship engines instead of fuel oil,” Qatargas chief operating officer (Commercial and Shipping) Alaa Abu Jbara told the VIPs and ministerial programme delegates at Gastech.
With MEGI, he said, Qatargas could burn LNG, have no sulphur emissions, as well as cut carbon dioxide emissions by 20% compared to fuel oil.
Another initiative that Qatargas was undertaking is the JBOG (Jetty Boil Off Gas) project, which is expected to save approximately 0.6mn tonnes of LNG per annum (MTA) — equivalent energy to power 40,000 homes, he said.
“Today, Qatargas is producing 42MTA, positioning it as the largest LNG supplier in the world,” he said, adding it supplied 21 importing countries worldwide.
Last year, Qatargas supplied 24% of LNG to Europe and 14% to Asia. At present, Qatargas is the number one supplier of LNG to Japan, China, the UAE, Kuwait, Mexico, Canada and the UK, according to Alaa Abu Jbara.“The vision for Qatargas is to be the world’s premier LNG company. To help attain this status Qatargas is committed to meeting four key objectives: to have a talented and diverse workforce which is second to none in the industry; to maintain and exceed current levels of customer satisfaction; to generate returns for our shareholders and, lastly, to set the standard in safety and environmental awareness in the LNG Industry,” Jbara said.
