St. Petersburg inaugurates southern section of WHSD
St. Petersburg has put into service the second phase of the southern section of the Western High-Speed Diameter (WHSD), from Blagodatnaya Str to the embankment of the River of Ekateringofka, the St. Petersburg government press office said.
Commissioning of the toll highway section will provide a connection with the Big Port of St. Petersburg from beltway, bypassing the city roads network, and will create a direct connection of downtown from the waterfront to the Bypass Canal to beltway. Total length of the eight-lane southern section is 8.5 miles.
Along with the construction of the southern section St. Petersburg renovated road network of Gutuevsky Island, were the 1st and 2nd districts of the port are located.
Additional toll booths for collection of fees will be opened on the new southern section of WHSD near the junction with Blagodatnaya Str for the vehicular traffic toward embankment of Ekateringofka River. Dedicated lanes with automatic toll collection will be open in both directions.
Construction of the southern section began in the fall of 2005. In October 2008, traffic opened on the highway section with connection to 3rd and 4th districts of the Port of St. Petersburg and Stachek Avenue through Avtomobilnaya Street. In October 2010, traffic was opened on the WHSD section from Krasnoputilovskaya to Blagodatnaya Street.
