RS Class: keel laying of a new generation icebreaker
On 10 October 2012, the keel of a new 25 MW diesel icebreaker will be laid down at OOO Baltiysky Zavod – Shipbuilding (Baltic Shipyard). The ship will be built under the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS) survey with class notation КМ*Icebreaker8 [2] AUT1-ICS OMBO FF2WS DYNPOS-2EPP ANTI-ICE HELIDECK-H WINTERIZATION (-40) ECO-S special purpose ship, the society press release said.
The icebreaker is designed in accordance with the latest requirements for ships of its class, and it will be fitted out with the newest generation equipment. The ship is intended for independent escort of ships, auxiliary icebreaker operation as part of ice convoy along the Northern Sea Route as well as for independent ship escort in shallow waters of the Arctic seas and in river estuaries, supporting cargo unloading on coast ice, towage of ships and other floating facilities in ice conditions and on clear water, assistance to ships, emergency and rescue operations in ice and on clear water, expeditionary voyages, acting as fire-fighting ship for fire extinguishing on board of ships, drilling and oil production facilities.
