Penang Port to add car hub to boost attractiveness
Penang Port is building a MYR630m ($197.2m) automotive logistics hub on the mainland side of Penang state, in what it hopes will raise its profile as a transportation and logistics hub, Seatrade Asia online reports.
Facilities will be further boosted with the construction of a MYR200m Boon Siew Honda Sdn Bhd facility in Batu Kawan, Seberang Prai, which will serve as a one-stop production and sales centre. Boon Siew is also reportedly keen on producing high-end performance bikes there and expanding its existing domestic sales to Asean markets from the hub.
It will also house the company's manufacturing plant and service, parts and safety riding centre, along with a site to promote motor sports development
Penang Port's shipment volume is set to increase by as early as next year from the projects, Northern Corridor Implementation Authority (NCIA) chief executive Redza Rafiq, was quoted as saying.
Construction will be by PKT Logistics Group, whose customers in the northern region include automotive players Naza Group and Sime Darby's Inokom Corp. The group was also expected to work with automotive assemblers to set up the hub in terms of providing end-to-end design, implementation and operation of logistics solutions in freight forwarding, customs brokering, contract logistics, haulage and distribution management.
