Icebreaker Vaigach starts summer navigation
The nuclear-powered icebreaker "Vaigach" on June 7, 2012 departed from home port of Murmansk and set sail to the Northern Sea Route, the FSUE Atomflot press service said. The icebreaker’s task is to ensure safe sailings of merchant ships on the Northern Sea Route.
The company said that the first ships of Murmansk Shipping Company laden with cargo intended for the so-cold “Northern deliveries” will depart from Murmansk in late June. The beginning of shipments of transit cargo are scheduled for July.
Last year, the icebreaker (commissioned on March 6, 1989) was escorting on the northern shipping lane cargo vessels, such as the giant oil tanker Vladimir Tikhonov (owner SCF Grou) carrying a cargo of gas condensate of Novatek.
This year, the icebreaker Vaigach is expected to be back in Murmansk in late July.
