Bangladesh to build Chittagong port as gateway to SA's business hub
The cargo handling of Chittagong Port has gone into full-fledged automation as Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today inaugurated the much-awaited container terminal management system (CTMS) in the country's premier seaport today, reports BSS.
Introducing the CTMS, the modern digitised system of container handling, and the radiation detection system of the port, the Prime Minister reiterated her government's firm commitment to building Chittagong Port as the gateway to the trade activities of South Asia.
"The government is very much sincere in the development of Chittagong port as the country's 90 per cent export and import are made through this port," she said.
Sheikh Hasina also mentioned that her government is taking all -out efforts so that the port-users do not face any hassle and can export and import with transparency.
"The government has also taken initiatives to build a deep seaport at Sonadia in Cox's Bazar for expanding the regional trade by utilising the geographical advantage of Chittagong port which has been working as a trade link between South and Southeast Asia," she said.
The Prime Minister said the government has taken a mega plan for dredging of the inland river routes for the optimum use of waterway in the country. "The dredging in the Pashur river channel would begin soon for the development of the Mongla Port," she said.
Sheikh Hasina said a multipurpose development plan has also been undertaken for Mongla Port for expanding the regional trade. "The plan would be implemented during the tenure of the present government Insha Allah," she said.
The Prime Minister said her government is firmly committed to developing the maritime sector. "We want to become an ideal and strong maritime power comprising Bangladesh Navy, Bangladesh Coast Guard, Bangladesh Shipping Corporation and shipping trade sector," she said.
Sheikh Hasina said the present government has set up a unique example of sincerity in the maritime sector by establishing 'Sheikh Mujib Maritime University' on the Marine Academy premises.
