Vietnam’s first deep-water port unveiled
The southern province of Ba Ria – Vung Tau recently inaugurated Vietnam’s first deep-water container port, the Cai Mep International Terminal (CMIT), Tuoitre News reports.
CMIT is capable of docking large vessels with loading capacity of up to 160,000 DWT thanks to its five Super Post-Panamax Ship-To-Shore (STS) cranes.
The US$268.6-million terminal is currently offering transporting routes connecting Vietnam with countries in Asia, Europe and America.
Earlier in March, when construction was still on progress, CMIT received the 131,263-DWT CMA CGM Columbia ship with the loading capacity of 11.388 TEU, which was the largest vessel ever to dock in Vietnam.
CMIT have so far received 104 mother ships and loaded around 151,000 TEUs, the Saigon Times Online reported.
The developer of CMIT was the Cai Mep International Terminal, a joint-venture between Saigon New Port Corporation, Vietnam National Shipping Lines and the Denmark’s APM Terminals founded in 2007.
