The forecast for oil production at the Novoportovskoye field in 2017 is very optimistic. Evgeniy Ambrosov, Senior Executive Vice President of PAO Sovcomflot and Vice Chair of the Arctic Economic Council, does not rule out the construction of more vessels under the project, IAA PortNews correspondent says.
“The production is already above the expectations and we are looking hopefully into building more vessels under this project. We hope we will need one or two more vessels,” said Evgeniy Ambrosov. According to him, Russian shipyards are considered in that respect.
Evgeniy Ambrosov explained that state-of-the-art Arctic vessels deployed for the project are quite sophisticated Arc7 ships able to break through 1.7-metre thick ice.
“The fleet intended for this project complies with the highest environmental standards … The vessels are equipped with ballast water management systems and feature a closed-cycle circulation of technical water. In terms of safe navigation the vessels are above all the standards,” emphasized Evgeniy Ambrosov.
He also reminded that the first Polar Ship Certificate was obtained by the Shturman Albanov, the tanker of that series. “It confirms not only good technical state and compliance with high standards but also high qualification of the crews as the Polar Code also requires the compliance with crew training standards,” explained Evgeniy Ambrosov.
Sovcomflot’s three unique Arctic shuttle tankers, of the Shturman Albanov series, have already transported one million tonnes of crude oil produced at the Novy Port oil and gas condensate field (Novoportovskoye), from the Gulf of Ob (Kara Sea) to the port of Murmansk. The milestone millionth tonne cargo of oil was loaded on Shturman Albanov on 29 January 2017 at the Arctic Gate marine terminal located near Cape Kamenny (Gulf of Ob).
Sovcomflot’s three Arctic shuttle tankers – Shturman Albanov, Shturman Malygin and Shturman Ovtsyn – are specially designed to carry crude oil from the Yamal Peninsula (Yamal-Nenets Autonomous District) to the port of Murmansk all year round. The vessels are registered under the Russian flag and have Saint Petersburg as their home port. Oil is shipped under a long-term contract with Gazprom Neft.

The tankers of the Shturman Albanov series have unique specifications. The deadweight of each tanker is about 42,000 tonnes (Shturman Albanov - 41,454 tonnes, Shturman Malygin - 41,541 tonnes, and Shturman Ovtsyn – 41,551 tonnes). All three vessels have a length of 249 m and a breadth of 34 m.
