Second phase of Changsha Ningxia port opens
THE second phase of Changsha Ningxia New Port, a major river port development in China's Hunan province, has recently begun operation following the opening of a new terminal that is able to handle 2,000 tonne vessels.
Since the project began in 2005 authorities have invested CNY216 million (US$27.27 million) in building the second phase, which comprises four berths for the trade in containers and bulk cargo built on a quay line extending 295 metres.
The second phase terminal covers an area measuring 221,600 square metres and includes a 12,000-square-metre warehouse, a Xinhua report said,
Changsha Ningxia New Port is one of 28 major river ports in China. Authorities are investing CNY850 million to develop the river port, which will eventually occupy a 1.33-square-kilometre site and provide intermodal rail services as well as support logistics parks.
The port development project will be undertaken in three phases, the first of which was completed in July 2003.
An official from the Changsha Port Bureau was cited as saying by the news wire that when all the three phases are completed, the river port will boast 14 berths with a collective annual container handling capacity of 564,000 TEU and 4.9 million tons of cargo.
