Port of Hamburg (Germany) handled 43.6 million tons of container cargo over 6 months 2006
Total cargo turnover of Hamburg over 6 months 2006 amounted to 66.2 million tons (+9.7% as compared with year-on-year result). Container turnover of the first half-year amounted to 4.2 million TEU (+10.7%). Total tonnage of container cargo handled in the port of Hamburg over 6 months amounted to 43.6 million tons. From the beginning of the year the port handled 21.2 million tons of dry and liquid bulk cargo. Half-year growth within this group was the following: cargo transshipped by pneumatic equipment – 32.6%, by grab method – 5.6%, liquid bulk cargo – 10.3%. Cargo flow of bulk materials grew by 10.5% as compared with the first half of the previous year.
Transshipment of conventional cargo decreased by 4.5%, their turnover over 6 months amounted to 1.3 million tons. At the same time, despite the decrease typical for all European ports, volume of loaded vessels increased owing to project cargo and increased import of fruit.
Container turnover between Hamburg and Russia grew over first half-year 2006 by 43.6% to 252 405 TEUs. It is expected that cargo turnover between the two countries will exceed 0.5 million TEUs in 2006. Almost all this cargo is handled by container terminals of Saint Petersburg.
