First transit container train was launched on September 21 from China to Russia via Kazakhstan. According to RZhD-Partner referring to Interfax, this information has been provided by Askar Mamin, Kazakhstan Minister of Transport and Communication. "First container train has been launched today at the rout Urumchi-Dostyk-Aksaraisk-Novorossisk in the direction to the Eastern Europe Countries ", he reported at the VI international conference "TransEurasia - 2006". The Minister also noted special tariff conditions for this train transportation across Kazakhstan".
As it was reported earlier, in the course of Sochi visit of Nursultan Nazarbaev, President of Kazakhstan, Russia and Kazakhstan has come to an agreement as regards railroad transportation of container cargo via China and Kazakhstan to Russia and then further to Europe. According to Nazarbaev, container transportation of cargo from the Pacific Ocean to Europe via Kazakhstan is important for the country. At the same time Azerbaijan and Georgia consider the possibility of container train to run on the permanent basis at the rout: Almaty - Aktau - Baku - Poti. Pilot container train was launched at the rout on December 24, 2005. The project of multimodal railway transportation at the rout between Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Georgia should contribute to competitive ability of TRACECA corridor and as well as to the development of container transportation. Bulgaria and China expressed their interest in joining this project. In order to increase attractiveness of this project Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Georgia agreed on introduction of a unified tariff for container transportation along the corridor at the level of US2.2 cents per 1 ton-km.
