Nothing predetermines creation of military & political blocs in Arctic, Russia’s representative in Arctic Council says (photo)
There is nothing to predetermine the creation of military and political blocs in the Arctic, IAA PortNews journalist cites Anton Vasiljev, Russia’s representative in the Arctic Council, as saying at the 2nd International Conference “Northern Sea Route” in Saint-Petersburg.
According to him, it is not correct to speak about the militarization of the North. However, the diplomat acknowledged the growth of military footprint in the Arctic but named it to be a “natural process” relating to ice melting and boosting of activities in the polar region.
Vasiljev believes that cooperation in the Arctic features positive and non-confrontational development.
