Chennai marks a milestone with 1m boxes
The second private container terminal at Chennai Port Trust has reached a milestone in handling one million containers within a span of 39 months, reported The Hindu.
An official release issued said the millionth container was handled on vessel Tiger Bridge, which operates on the Chennai-Colombo sector.
Owned and managed by PSA International, Chennai International Terminals also announced the maiden call of the Asia Chennai Service (ACS) on November 13.
The mainline service to the Far East covering the ports of Chennai, Singapore, Pusan, Ulsan, Shanghai, Yantian, West Port Klang, Singapore and Chennai is operated by the Korean line Hyundai Merchant Marine.
Chennai terminal has seven super post-panamax quay cranes (all twin lifts) and 18 rubber-tyred gantry cranes and its handling capacity has been doubled to 1.1 million TEUs. PSA is also increasing the number of reefer plugs in the terminal and will be constructing an additional stack yard to meet demands.
The PSA terminal currently has five mainline services to the Far East, two Colombo services and two coastal services calling at the terminal.
