Varandej export oil terminal in Nenets Autonomous Area has been renamed Sea Port Varandej
Council of deputies of Transpolar district of Nenets Autonomous Area (NAA) made a decision at the session held on September 12 to rename Varandej export oil terminal as Sea Port Varandej. This information has been provided by PRIME-TASS referring to the Information Board of Public Relations under NAA Administration. According to the Board export oil terminal is located at the territory of former national village that was acknowledged at the beginning of 90-ies as zone of ecological disorder. The terminal belongs to LUKOIL OJSC. Considering the development of a specialized oil port at the shore of the Barents Sea and establishment of a pass point at the border of the RF, Varandej Terminal Company asked first NAA and then Transpolar district government to rename the facilities under the company’s management as
Sea Port Varandej. District Administration and its deputies have complied with the request owing to their positive estimation of LUKOIL’s contribution into the development of the Barents Sea port infrastructure.
According to previous information of PRIME-TASS, Sea Port Varandej is to be put into operation in the third quarter of 2007. Border checkpoint will be opened after finalization of transport, engineering and social infrastructure. Feasibility study of the project for construction of Varandej export oil terminal was approved at the Ministry of Civil Defense, Emergency Situations and Disaster Control. Master plan for the development of Oil Port Varandej is under finalization. Export terminal at the Barents Sea will be built in the form of pile-supported ice-resistant tower. It is to be placed within the limits of territorial water of RF.
