On 64th Antarctic expedition, Russian fleet for scientific research expeditions and Antarctic development

    - As it is known, Antarctic Continent was discovered by Russian seafarers and the 64th Antarctic expedition is to leave Saint-Petersburg in the run-up to that event’s 200th anniversary we are going to celebrate in 2020. So, a delegation from Army and Fleet Support Organization has come to Saint-Petersburg from Moscow to hand over gifts and books to the members of the expedition. Besides, Igor Levitin, Aide to the President of Russia, asked me to read out his greetings to the expedition participants.

There are five permanent Russian stations operating in the Antarctica as well as a number of seasonal stations. So, our expeditions are regular, despite different economic situations. Today, the Akademik Fyodorov with several dozens of crewmembers takes about 100 expedition participants to the Antarctica. The ship will also deliver research equipment, fuel for permanent stations and other resources.

Russia will continue the Antarctic development. Some RUB 30 billion have been earmarked for construction of two new research ships particularly intended for Antarctic voyages. Besides, creation of new equipment and air wing as well as personnel training is needed for the Arctic development.
