Container-carrying train to ply between Russia and Finland
Freight transportation by rail between Russia and Finland is to be elevated to a qualitatively new stage: the duration of railway train runs will be shortened by four hours due to a container-carrying train, the Aurora Borealis, which is to make a demonstration run on Monday between the Finnish Kuovala station and the Russian Moskovskaya-Tovarnaya (Moscow freight station).
According to information from the press service of the Oktyabrskaya (October) Railway, the train will arrive at the Buslovskaya border station (Leningrad Region) at 10:59 Moscow time (07:59 GMT). Representatives of the Russian Railways Company (RRC) are to hear a report on the technology of arrangements for the plying of the container-carrying train, and customs and border inspections of the train.
The route of the train has been organized with the use of new technologies for the delivery of containerized freight, the technologies that make it possible to shorten the duration of the run resultant of the optimization of customs and border procedures alone.
The executives of the RRC and the Railways of Finland (VK Group Ltd.) will attend an official ceremony to welcome the train in Moscow and introduce a joint-venture enterprise. The demonstration run will be made within the framework of the presentation in Russia of a ContainerTransScandinavia joint-venture enterprise, established by the TransContainer public joint-stock company (a subsidiary of the RRC) and the VR Group Ltd. The JV was registered in Finland on March 22, 2007, and is to begin to operate early in May this year.
The purpose of cooperation is to render comprehensive services in export-, import- and transit-oriented transportation of containerized freight between Russia and Finland, and raise the quality of transportation services for domestic and foreign freight owners.
