WMU hosts Trends and Challenges in Maritime Energy Management Workshop
As part of the Nordic Clean Energy Week, WMU hosted the Trends and Challenges in Maritime Energy Management Workshop on 22 May. WMU says the workshop brought together 50 participants and provided a forum for maritime stakeholders to examine opportunities and challenges in the field of maritime energy with the aim of achieving an energy efficient and low carbon future for the maritime industry.
The half-day workshop addressed the Maritime Energy Management topics of: trends and challenges, renewable energy application at ports, carbon pricing for international maritime transport, LNG sectors, and social and human dimensions of energy management. Energy management is a key strategy for energy efficient and environmentally friendly shipping that enhances profitability within a tightening regulatory framework. It is significant for the achievement of UN Sustainable Development Goal 7 on ensuring access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all and Goal 14 on conservation and the sustainable use of the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development.
In connection with the Ninth Clean Energy Ministerial and Third Mission Innovation Ministerial (CEM9/MI-3) hosted by Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, the European Commission and the Nordic Council of Ministers from May 23 – 24, the Nordic Clean Energy Week took place from 21-24 May. Co-hosted by Sweden and Denmark, the week included various events for politicians, researchers, business and industry to gather to discuss future energy solutions.
WMU plays an active role in advancing UN Sustainable Development Goal 7 related to energy. The Maritime Energy (MarEner) research group at WMU focuses on the fundamental understanding of energy in a maritime context and the application of evidence-based knowledge across the field from ships to ports, and from oceans to shipyards, to ensure the cost-effective, safe and environmentally friendly use of resources. The MSc specialization on Maritime Energy Management, offered at WMU since 2015, is designed for professionals from the energy and environmental sectors, offering a comprehensive understanding of different aspects of maritime energy management, from ships to maritime onshore facilities. Renowned experts teach the skills and provide the expertise needed to achieve a sustainable and energy efficient maritime industry. In January of 2017, WMU hosted the International Conference on Maritime Energy Management (MARENER 2017).
